KEPENTINGAN NASIONAL TIONGKOK TERHADAP PEMASANGAN SISTEM ANTI RUDAL TERMINAL HIGH ALTITUDE AREA DEFENCE (THAAD) KOREA SELATAN 2016-2017

Abstract

The deployment of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) anti-missile defense system by South Korea in 2016–2017 led to tensions with China. The Chinese government opposed the presence of this system, considering it a threat to its national security. This study aims to explore China's national interests in responding to the deployment of THAAD using the national interest framework developed by Donald E. Nuechterlein. This research employs a qualitative method with a descriptive-analytical approach. Data collection was conducted through a literature review encompassing primary and secondary sources, such as academic journals, official reports, and government documents. The data analysis process follows the Miles and Huberman model, which includes data collection, reduction, presentation, and verification. The findings indicate that China's national interests in responding to THAAD are categorized into four main dimensions: defense, economy, world order, and ideology. The presence of THAAD is perceived as a threat to regional stability and security balance, prompting China to respond through diplomatic measures and economic sanctions. Further analysis reveals that China's foreign policy is influenced by security dilemmas and economic interdependence with South Korea. Although the deployment of THAAD has sparked diplomatic tensions, economic relations between the two countries have remained intact.
