Abstract

This essay explores the intricate and ongoing diplomatic tension between South Korea and Japan, rooted in the historical issue of "Comfort Women" (Jugun Ianfu) during World War II. Following Japan's defeat in the war, the country adopted a pacifist stance and sought to rebuild relations with its former colonies, including Korea. The atrocities committed against Korean women, forcibly conscripted as sexual slaves for Japanese soldiers, have left deep scars and remain a contentious issue. Despite several attempts to address the matter, including the 2015 agreement between the two nations, significant challenges persist. The agreement, which included a formal apology, financial compensation, and a promise to resolve the issue irreversibly, has faced criticism from victims and activists who feel it inadequately addressed their suffering and excluded them from the negotiation process. The essay also highlights the broader repercussions of this historical issue, including economic impacts such as trade disputes and supply chain disruptions, as well as heightened anti-Japanese sentiment in South Korea. Additionally, it examines the strain on trilateral security cooperation involving the U.S., South Korea, and Japan. The analysis underscores the complexity of achieving a fair resolution and the need for continued dialogue and inclusive approaches to heal historical wounds and improve bilateral relations.
