Abstract

This research aims to understand Vanuatu's foreign policy in prioritizing human rights issues in Papua in international forums during the 2016-2021 period. It aims to identify the strategic reasons behind Vanuatu's support for Papuan independence and explore how Vanuatu's diplomacy influences the country's regional and international standing. Vanuatu has consistently supported Papuan independence through active diplomacy in various international organizations, such as the United Nations (UN) and the Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG). This support is based on several strategic interests, including regional security, economic potential, and the spread of anti-colonialism ideology and Melanesian solidarity. Despite its limited resources, Vanuatu is able to utilize multilateral diplomacy to strengthen its position in the South Pacific region. This research shows that Vanuatu's support for Papuan independence is not only driven by ideological aspirations, but also as a strategy to improve regional stability and fight for human rights. Vanuatu's policy in supporting an independent Papua is a strategic step to strengthen its political, economic and security position in the South Pacific region.
