Abstract

The relationship between Pakistan and Russia has undergone significant dynamics from the Cold War to the modern era. During the Cold War, Pakistan was a key ally of the US-led Western Bloc, while the Soviet Union supported India in South Asian regional conflicts. Tensions peaked during the Soviet-Afghan War (1979-1989), in which Pakistan actively supported the Mujahideen against the Soviet Union. However, after the Cold War ended and the Soviet Union collapsed, Pakistan-Russia relations saw a positive shift. The two countries began cooperating in various fields, including trade, energy, and technology. In the defense sector, ties have strengthened through arms transfers and joint military exercises. Factors such as Pakistan’s desire to reduce its dependence on the United States and Russia’s more flexible foreign policy in South Asia have contributed to the improvement of bilateral relations. Despite challenges, including Russia’s historical ties with India, strategic cooperation between Pakistan and Russia continues to develop, particularly in military and security aspects.
