Abstract

Djibouti, a small country strategically located at the entrance of the Red Sea, has garnered global geopolitical attention due to its policy of hosting foreign military bases. One of the most significant developments was the establishment of a Chinese military base in 2017. This study analyzes Djibouti’s interests in accepting foreign military bases, particularly China’s, and the implications of this policy. Three key factors driving this decision are the economic benefits from base leases and infrastructure investments, the enhancement of national security and stability, and the strengthening of Djibouti’s diplomatic position in global dynamics. However, hosting foreign military bases also presents challenges, including potential sovereignty concerns, environmental impacts, and escalating geopolitical tensions among major powers with vested interests in the region, such as the United States and Japan. By adopting an analytical approach to Djibouti’s policies, this study highlights how the country balances strategic advantages with the risks associated with foreign military presence on its soil.
