KEPENTINGAN INDONESIA DI PASIFIK SELATAN MELALUI PENINGKATAN KERJA SAMA MILITER DENGAN FIJI TAHUN 2017-2024

Abstract

The South Pacific is a region that has complexity in various issues such as social, economic, political, and security, this region has a very strategic position with ownership of abundant natural resources. This condition makes the South Pacific a region contested by major world powers such as China and Australia, in this case Fiji is one of the countries that has the largest role in the South Pacific region. Indonesia began signing the “Agreement between the Republic of Indonesia and the Republic of Fiji on Cooperation in the Field of Defence” with Fiji in 2017, one of which discusses defense and security cooperation. This study aims to analyze Indonesia's national interests in increasing military cooperation with Fiji, which is related to Indonesia's role in the South Pacific. This study uses a qualitative-descriptive approach, data collection in this study uses literature study techniques. The results of this study indicate that Indonesia has several interests; First, to suppress support for separatist actions in West Papua. Second, to show Indonesia's military strength as a positive image in the region. Third, to form a large influence in the region so that it plays a role in maintaining regional security, especially on maritime issues. Fourth, to establish long-term harmonious relations based on economic interests.
